Botanical Illustration for Beginners

In this class you will learn a variety of simple drawing techniques that demonstrate how to accurately represent a three-dimensional plant specimen as a two-dimensional drawing using line and tone

Class demonstrations will be recorded and uploaded each week, available for the duration of and one week after completion of the series

Dramatic Landscapes

  • Synthesize representational images into an abstract visual language
  • Explore dry and wet media techniques for landscape art

Night Time Compositions

The Harvest Moon: Drawing for ‘A Pastoral Scene’ c.1831-2 Samuel Palmer 1805-1881

Moonlight as Muse

This short series is inspired by the mystery of the Moon as Muse in landscape painting.
Explore colour palettes for a nighttime scene.
Study master artist paintings on the theme of moonlight, as well as photographs of night scenes.
Develop watercolour mixing skills for a nighttime palette by investigating colour contrast and intensity.
Supplies include: Toned Blue Mixed Media Pad, watercolour paints, masking fluid or Gum arabic, white gouache paint

Study of Trees

Date: Friday, October 22nd, 29th and November5th

Time:10.00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT

Study and be inspired by master artists representation of trees. Explore silhouette shape, edge and branching structure of trees. Working with drawing and painting media to build a repertoire of mark-making to represent different species.

Illustrating Funghi

Date: Wednesday, October 20th, 27th and November 3rd

Time: 10.00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT

Watercolour mixing and applying colour step-by-step, working with layers and texture effects. Working form photographic and master botanical illustration reference of Funghi.

Contour outline drawings of the subject will be provided to transfer onto watercolour paper in preparation for watercolour techniques during class.

Atmosphere in Landscape – Watercolour Painting

Fridays, September 24th, October 1st and 8th
10.00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT

In this class we will study the expressive and atmospheric techniques JMW Turner uses in his watercolour sketches. Instructor demonstrations based on English watercolour tradition adding experimentation by working small scale thumbnails to more developed studies over the course of three weeks.
The images will be based on a reference photograph and a watercolour landscape by an English watercolour artist
I can provide these images for you to follow along in the demonstrations, or you can work from your own reference images.
