Explore the unique visual language of 20th-century artist Paul Klee, who reimagined landscapes through a blend of observation and imagination. His playful, abstract worlds use symbols, rhythmic lines, in vibrant watercolour layers, to express how a place feels rather than how it looks.
Using simple studies of photographic scenes, interpret the geometry and contours of mountains; the rhythm and patterns of trees, water and sky planes. Practice drawing techniques to dissect scenes and abstract structures into motif, using line, shape and form.
With a focus on process, play and abstraction try out the experimental spirit of Klee while building skills in colour, compositon and imaginative mark-making.
Study a selection of his woks related to landscape and nature, sourced from Art Galleries, Museums and University Art collections online.
Suggested Art Supplies: Graphite pencil HB; watercolour paints helpful to include a six primary (warm/cool) colours; Cold Press Watercolour Paper 300gm / 140lb

“I was a complete beginner when I began Katharine’s classes, something completely outside my comfort zone. Through her skillful instruction I have now learned how to draw and paint... a very empowering experience. It gives me great enjoyment and I always feel good about whatever I have completed, whether in class or on my own. Thank-you so much Katharine for bringing such a big new positive to my life!”
