Explore the inventive drawing and painting techniques of master draughtsman and watercolourist J.M.W.Turner, observed from examples from his sketchbooks found at Tate Gallery London, U.K.

Class Overview

Re-create a selection of his images to better understand his process.

Apply these learnt techniques to your own compositions, working with photographs of local landscape that inspire the atmosphere of a Turneresque study.

Practice Mark-Making:

  • Working with a variety of conventional and unconventional painting tools - explore a range of surface marks on paper

  • Vary application methods - pressure, movement and flow of brush-marks

  • Paint to water ratio, paint liquidity on dry or wet watercolour papers
